The short answer: Standard, Advanced and Premium are no longer three products. Since Sage 100 version 2023 they are three ways of installing one product, and the only differences that survive are where the program runs and which database holds the data. Sage’s own upgrade guide says the option to install Sage 100 Standard, Advanced or Premium was removed and replaced by an architecture choice at installation: Stand-Alone or LAN, or Client/Server, and for Client/Server a database choice between ProvideX and Microsoft SQL Server. Whether you renew, change architecture or leave for QuickBooks Enterprise, the edition changes how the data comes out, not what is in it. For two decades the MAS 90 and MAS 200 lineage sold as three editions. Sage 100 Standard was the small-office product: the ProvideX programs and data files sat on one machine or a shared LAN folder, and each workstation ran the program across the network. Sage 100 Advanced was MAS 200: the same ProvideX data files, but an Application Server on the Windows server ran the program and workstations talked to it over TCP/IP. Sage 100 Premium was Advanced with the data moved out of ProvideX files and into Microsoft SQL Server databases.
Sage’s upgrade guide for version 2023, under “Installation Simplification,” states that Sage 100 “has been consolidated into a single product with three installation approaches.” The installer now asks for an architecture, Stand-Alone or LAN or Client/Server, and if you choose Client/Server it asks whether the database is ProvideX or Microsoft SQL Server. The three combinations are the three old editions under new names, and Sage’s own install guides still carry the old names in their titles: the “Installing Sage 100 Advanced” guide tells you to select Client/Server and ProvideX, and the “Installing Sage 100 Premium” guide tells you to select Client/Server and Microsoft SQL Server, with SQL Server installed first.

A Standard installation is a folder. The MAS90 directory holds the programs, the company data and the Crystal report definitions, and every workstation opens the files across the network share. The practical consequences for an owner are two. Performance depends on the network and the file server rather than on an application server, and the data is portable as a folder: copy MAS90 and you have copied the company. For a conversion that is convenient, because a read-only copy of the folder is a complete archive and the Sage 100 ODBC driver reads every table in it without the live system being touched.
Advanced moves the program to the server. The install guide’s requirements are TCP/IP between server and workstations, an Application Server service set up after installation, and a share at least one folder above MAS90 for Workstation Setup. The data files are still ProvideX, in the same table layout as Standard, which is why Sage can convert between the two without a data migration and why the KB can tell an Advanced site to run in Standard mode for troubleshooting. What Advanced buys is that the program logic runs next to the data, so a busy office with many concurrent users stops pushing every file read across the wire. The edition does not lock in the data: the extraction path is identical to Standard.
Premium is Advanced with Microsoft SQL Server as the database. Sage’s install guide requires SQL Server to be installed first, on the same server or a separate one, and creates a MAS_SYSTEM database plus one MAS_ database per company code. For an IT team that already runs SQL Server, Premium means point-in-time backups, standard SQL reporting tools and a familiar security model. For a conversion it means the cleanest extraction of the three: every table can be queried directly and the audit trail is a set of saved queries.
The same things, from all three, because the schema is the same. Chart of accounts with segment structure flattened into QuickBooks accounts and classes; customers, vendors and items with their custom fields where QuickBooks has a place for them; open receivables and payables by invoice; inventory on hand by warehouse into Enterprise’s inventory sites; open sales orders and purchase orders; and as many years of transaction history as you scope, with bank balances reconciled to the Sage 100 ending balances at cutover. What a QuickBooks move drops is the same from all three as well: Sage 100’s multi-segment account numbers become account plus class, its warehouse-level reorder and lot/serial detail lands in Enterprise’s Advanced Inventory only on the Platinum and Diamond subscriptions, and Production Management, Inventory Requirements Planning and Bill of Materials routings have no equivalent and are archived rather than converted.
The edition changes three practical things. On Standard, extraction runs against a copy of the MAS90 folder and the live system is never opened. On Advanced, the same copy is taken from the server share; the Application Server is irrelevant to the data. On Premium, extraction is a SQL backup restored to a scratch instance and queried there. In every case the Sage 100 installation is kept read-only after cutover as the archive, which the history-scoping decision in how much history to migrate relies on.
Since 2023 the edition question inside Sage is an infrastructure question. A Standard site whose complaint is speed on a busy LAN moves to Client/Server. A Client/Server site whose complaint is reporting or backups moves to SQL Server. The honest “stay on Sage 100” profile is a distributor or manufacturer that lives in Production Management, Inventory Requirements Planning or multi-segment general-ledger reporting, because those are the pieces QuickBooks Enterprise does not have and third-party add-ons only partly replace. The profile that leaves is the company using General Ledger, AR, AP, Sales Order, Purchase Order and Inventory with one to three warehouses, paying for a server, an Application Server and a Sage business partner to keep a product running whose functions it uses about a third of. For that company the edition it is on decides only how the data is pulled, and the renewal date decides when.

For troubleshooting, yes. Sage’s Knowledgebase article on running Advanced in Standard mode has you start Pvxwin32.exe from the MAS90 Home folder and run STARTUP.M4P, which opens the same ProvideX data without the Application Server. Sage does not recommend this for normal operation, and users cannot see each other while in that mode.
No. The three architectures share one table layout, so the same accounts, customers, vendors, items, open documents, inventory by warehouse and transaction history come out of each. The edition changes only the extraction path: an ODBC read of a copied MAS90 folder for Standard and Advanced, or SQL queries against a restored backup of the MAS_ databases for Premium.
Production Management with work tickets and scheduling, Inventory Requirements Planning, Bill of Materials routings, and multi-segment account numbers used for reporting. Warehouse inventory, lot and serial numbers and bin locations do carry over, but only to the Platinum and Diamond subscriptions of Enterprise, where Intuit includes Advanced Inventory.
