Viewpoint Vista is a full construction ERP; QuickBooks Enterprise is desktop accounting with contractor job costing added on. Stay on Vista if you run union payroll across several locals, certify payroll on many public jobs, or bill equipment to jobs from a managed fleet. QuickBooks Enterprise fits once Vista has quietly become a ledger, a job-cost report and a payroll run for an open-shop crew. The deciding test is not the feature list but how many Vista modules your people still open every week. Sources: Trimble’s Vista product page and Vista help (Job Cost; Crafts, Classes and Templates; Certified Payroll, all modified 2 Sep 2026); Intuit’s Enterprise contractor and features pages and its Desktop certified-payroll article (updated 8/5/2026); all read 8 October 2026.
Viewpoint Vista. Trimble calls Vista “construction ERP software” and describes it as “a fully integrated ERP solution for job costing, financial management, HR, service management and jobsite tracking.” It is sold as part of the Trimble Construction One suite. The product page lists job-cost accounting, automated invoicing and payments, workforce and payroll management, service management, equipment management, and analytics. Vista’s help documents include both a cloud deployment section and an on-premises section. Trimble does not publish a price; the page asks you to request one.
The heart of Vista is its Job Cost module. Trimble’s help calls it “the core of the Vista integrated construction management system.” Every cost is posted to a job, phase and cost type. A phase can carry up to 255 cost types, and every phase links to a contract item that is billed through Job Billing.
QuickBooks Enterprise. Intuit sells QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise in Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond subscriptions, plus a Construction & Contractors edition. Intuit says that edition has “the same key features as the standard edition” plus contractor reports, menus and a tailored chart of accounts. The contractor page lists job costing, prepayments on estimates and sales orders, Desktop Payroll and Advanced Reporting. Licences come in single steps from 1 to 10 users, then 20 or 30. Diamond goes up to 40 users. Cloud access is a separate hosting add-on.

Two rows usually decide the question. Union payroll and equipment are where Vista is far ahead. Users and price are where QuickBooks Enterprise is simpler.
Pull these from Vista before you speak to any vendor. Each count is a fact you can check, not a feeling about the software.
If four of the five counts come out small, QuickBooks Enterprise is a realistic home. If two or more come out large, you are pricing an ERP, not a ledger.
Craft templates, reciprocal agreements, service work orders, equipment logs, project-management documents and detailed phase history don’t convert into QuickBooks fields. The usual approach is to convert open jobs and balances, bring history across as summary job-to-date figures, and keep Vista reports for closed jobs in a read-only archive your CPA and surety can still use.
Stay on Vista if your union payroll, certified jobs or equipment fleet are what the business runs on. A cheaper ledger will just push that work into spreadsheets. If you want to leave Vista but need cloud access, project budgeting and several entities, Intuit Enterprise Suite is the other Intuit option. It is a different product from Desktop Enterprise, and our Vista to IES page compares it with Vista.
For an open-shop contractor using Vista mainly for job costing, AP, AR and payroll, often yes. For union contractors with several locals, many certified jobs or an equipment fleet billed to jobs, usually not, because QuickBooks has no craft hierarchy or equipment module.
Yes, with QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. Intuit’s certified payroll report runs in Excel. It needs weekly pay, prevailing-wage payroll items and job costing set up, and the Primary Administrator signed in in single-user mode.
Up to 40 on Diamond. Licences come in single steps from 1 to 10 users, then 20 or 30, and every user needs a licence on the same version year.
Open jobs convert with their contract values, costs to date and billings. Closed-job detail is usually summarised, and the full Vista reports are kept in a read-only archive for your CPA and surety.
We are not a CPA firm or tax adviser. Confirm WIP, revenue recognition and payroll compliance with your CPA before you commit. Ready to plan a move off Vista? Our Viewpoint Vista migration page explains how open jobs, retainage, and AR and AP are reconciled before go-live. We also scope Desktop Enterprise targets through our data conversion services, and give a fixed quote once we’ve reviewed your data.
