QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuation Schedule: Every Version and Date

Quick answer: QuickBooks Desktop 2023 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0) was discontinued on May 31, 2026 — payroll, bank feeds, payments, and security updates have stopped. QuickBooks Desktop 2024 is next: its services end May 31, 2027. Your file is not locked and the software still opens, but each version loses its connected services three years after release, every May 31.

The QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation schedule

Intuit discontinues each QuickBooks Desktop version three years after release, always on May 31. This is a published, predictable policy — here is where every recent version stands:

VersionServices endStatus as of Aug 2026
QuickBooks Desktop 2022 (Pro/Premier/Mac Plus, Enterprise 22.0)May 31, 2025Discontinued
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 (Pro/Premier/Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0)May 31, 2026Discontinued
QuickBooks Desktop 2024 (Pro/Premier/Mac Plus, Enterprise 24.0)May 31, 2027Supported — next in line

If you are running QuickBooks Desktop 2023 today, discontinuation has already happened — services stopped on May 31, 2026. If you are on 2024, you have until May 31, 2027, and the clock runs out whether or not you feel ready.

What actually stops working

Per Intuit’s service discontinuation policy, a discontinued Desktop version loses:

  • Payroll — tax tables stop updating, paychecks no longer calculate taxes automatically, direct deposit and payroll subscriptions are deactivated, and QuickBooks Workforce access ends. Running payroll on a discontinued version means hand-calculating withholdings — a compliance risk, not just an inconvenience.
  • Bank feeds and online banking — no downloading transactions, no online payments or transfers.
  • Payments — credit card and check processing, eInvoice, recurring payment downloads, and Merchant Service Deposit reconciliation all stop.
  • Emailing forms — invoices and reports can no longer be emailed from inside QuickBooks.
  • Live support and security updates — no technical support, and no critical security patches, which matters more every year the version ages.
  • Accountant Copy Transfer, multi-currency rate updates, contributed reports — also discontinued.

What does NOT happen

Honesty matters here: Intuit does not lock your file. A discontinued QuickBooks Desktop still opens, your company file is intact, and you can keep entering transactions manually. Plenty of businesses limp along this way. The problem is the drift — unsupported software with no security patches, no bank feeds, and manual payroll is a slow accumulation of risk and hours, and file damage on an unsupported version is much harder to recover from. If your file is already misbehaving, run it through our free QuickBooks File Analyzer before deciding anything.

Why you can’t just buy Desktop again

Since September 30, 2024, Intuit no longer sells new QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscriptions to US customers. Existing subscribers can keep renewing, and Intuit continues security updates and support for them — but if you let a subscription lapse or you’re on a discontinued perpetual license, the Pro/Premier door is closed. The only Desktop product still sold to new customers is QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

That reshapes the decision: for most businesses coming off Desktop 2023 or facing the 2024 sunset, the realistic paths are Enterprise (stay on Desktop, more capability, higher cost) or QuickBooks Online (lower entry cost, different workflow — and note QBO’s own August 2026 price increase before assuming it’s the cheap option).

Your three real options, honestly compared

  • 1. Move to QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Same platform family, your file migrates cleanly, payroll and bank feeds keep working. Right for inventory-heavy, job-costing, or multi-entity businesses that need Desktop’s depth. We convert Sage, older Desktop versions, and damaged files into Enterprise routinely.
  • 2. Move to QuickBooks Online. Right for service businesses and teams that want cloud access. The catch is the conversion itself: Intuit’s own migration tool has a 750,000 “targets” limit, and large or damaged Desktop files fail it. That is exactly the work we do — see Desktop vs Online compared and when switching makes sense.
  • 3. Stay put, eyes open. Legitimate for a wind-down business or one with no payroll and no bank feeds. Keep offline backups, and know that support for a damaged file gets harder every year.

If you tell us your version, file size, and whether payroll is active, we’ll tell you which path fits and quote it fixed — no hourly meter. Prefer zero forms? Email a screenshot of your Ctrl+1 (Product Information) screen to [email protected] and we’ll reply with a fixed quote within one business day.

Common questions

Will QuickBooks Desktop 2024 stop working after May 31, 2027?

The software will still open and your data stays intact, but connected services end: payroll tax tables, direct deposit, bank feeds, payments processing, emailing forms, live support, and security updates all stop for 2024 versions after May 31, 2027, following Intuit's standard three-year policy.

Is QuickBooks Desktop being discontinued entirely?

No. Intuit stopped selling new Pro Plus and Premier Plus subscriptions to US customers after September 30, 2024, but existing subscribers can keep renewing, and QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise remains fully sold and supported with new versions each year.

Can I still run payroll on a discontinued version?

Not safely. Tax tables stop updating and payroll subscriptions are deactivated, so paychecks no longer calculate withholdings correctly and forms aren't filed. If you run payroll, treat the discontinuation date as a hard deadline.

How long does it take to move off a discontinued Desktop version?

A clean Desktop-to-Enterprise upgrade is typically days. Desktop-to-QBO depends on file size and health; large files that exceed Intuit's migration limits need professional conversion, which we fixed-quote after a free file review.
